Social Media Content Ideas | May 2021

Are you looking for some fun social media content ideas for the month of May?

If so, this blog is for you!  It’s so easy to get stuck when creating content for your social media accounts. This list of 20+ silly holidays will give you plenty of social media content ideas to use for your business in May 2021.

Here is how this will work…

I am going to give you the holiday and the day it takes place, and then I’m going to tell you how you can make it relevant to your business.

BONUS — I made you a monthly calendar so that you can print it and keep track of all of these social media ideas in one place.

You can download it here: Social Media Content Calendar – May 2021

If you’re more into watching videos than you are into reading blogs, you can watch this video on my YouTube channel instead.

Okay, let’s get this party started!

May 1 – National Fitness Day

This is obviously a good fit for someone who is in the fitness industry! If you’re not in the fitness industry, you can:

  • Share your personal fitness journey.
  • Ask people what they do for fun to stay fit.
  • Share the profiles of some of your favorite people to follow in the fitness industry.
  • Do a movement challenge for a giveaway.
  • Create an Instagram Reel and challenge people to remix it and move with you.

Fitness is so important to our overall health – so find a way to incorporate it.  My personal favorite is a dance party.

May 2-9 – Small Business Week

If this isn’t an obvious reason to celebrate, I don’t know what is!

  • Highlight your favorite small businesses.
  • Run a special and ask people to support your small business.
  • Share why you decided to start your business.
  • Go live with another small business to talk about anything small business related!

May 3 – Lemonade Day

This was created to encourage an entrepreneurial spirit in young people. I know that when I was a kid, I was ALWAYS looking for ways to make money. I owned a couple of “businesses” by the time I was in fourth grade.  One of them was selling kool-aid and candy to neighborhood kids on the street corner in the summer.

I learned all about the cost of doing business, marketing, and all sorts of other business lessons at a very young age.

To celebrate this day, you can:

  • Share your story of how you made money as a kid.
  • Go to lemonadeday.org to get involved with their National Lemonade Day project, whether it’s volunteering, or donating your time or money.

May 4 – Star Wars Day

If your dream client is kinda nerdy, you can definitely have some fun with this holiday! It’s also a good way to reveal your inner nerd if you’ve been hiding it away.

Just beware that Disney stirred up some drama by claiming that anyone that uses the #maythe4th hashtag gives them permission to use your post and account name per their terms of use. Not sure if it actually holds weight, but something to keep in mind.

May 4 – National Teachers Day

Run a special for teachers, or just express your gratitude for teachers.

I for one, am SO thankful that the whole homeschool situation is behind me, and am SO appreciative of my kids’ teachers.

May 5 – Cinco de Mayo

Aside from obviously drinking margs and eating tacos, you could connect with your audience on a personal level by sharing your favorite foods to eat, or a special margarita recipe!

You could also just take the day off and day drink. After all… you are your own boss.

May 6 – Beverage Day

Share your favorite drink! It doesn’t have to be an alcoholic beverage… it could be a coffee or lemonade or tea… or maybe even water.  Entrepreneurs are fueled by beverages… so share your favorites, and ask your audience for theirs.

May 6 – National  Nurses Day

Make a post thanking a nurse, celebrate your nurse clients, or run a special for them on this day. This day kicks off Nurses Week, which runs from May 6-12, 2021.

May 7 –  Military Spouse Appreciation Day

While I have been fortunate that my husband’s job in the military keeps him in one place, it’s much more common for families to be moved to new bases every 2-3 years.

Therefore, it is often more difficult for the spouses of service members to hold jobs, which means that many of them end up starting their own businesses.

Google “Military Spouse Owned Business” and you’ll find a whole list of businesses that you can share and support.

May 7 – Packaging Design Day

I don’t know who thought this needed it’s own day, but I for one, absolutely love and appreciate a well packaged product! It shows that the company put for the extra effort to be stand out and be memorable.

If your product or service comes in a fancy package, then BRAG ABOUT IT.  Show it off.  Tell the world why your stuff is the best and describe how your packaging makes people feel.

Just look at these adorable rainbow boxes that NW Rain Bows has.

May 9 – Mothers Day

There’s no doubt that you’ve probably spent more time with your children in the last year than ever before. It’s probably best if you just ask for the day off instead of gifts.

May 15 – Armed Forces Day, Chocolate Chip Day, and World Whiskey Day

May 16 – Mimosa Day

It’s the perfect day to celebrate your wins with a photo of you making a toast, and it’s an excuse to start drinking at breakfast… not that you needed one.

May 17 –  Tax Day

It’s the last day to file your 2020 taxes. There’s nothing really to celebrate this day… just a reminder to get it done.

May 20 – Be a Millionaire Day

It’s fun to dream about all of the things you would do if you were a millionaire, but I thought I’d give you a break down of what it actually takes to earn a million dollars in a year…

  • 5,000 people to buy a $200 product
  • 2,000 people to buy a $500 product
  • 1,000 people to buy a $1,000 product
  • 500 people to buy a $2,000 product
  • 300 people to buy a $3,333 product

You can also break it down by monthly income:

  • 5,000 people to pay $17/month for 12 months
  • 2,000 people to pay $42/month for 12 months
  • 1,000 people to pay $83/month for 12 months
  • 500 people to pay $157/month for 12 months
  • 300 people to pay $278/month for 12 months

It’s kind of cool to look at it like that, right?

May 21 – Pizza Party Day

This day has the word party in it… and if you don’t love pizza, we probably can’t be friends.

May 25 – Wine Day

Use this holiday the same way we used all the rest of the beverage holidays this month.

May 30th is my Birthday!

If it’s not already obvious, I’ll accept gifts in the form of pizza, margaritas, sunshine, palm trees, or rainbows. #branding

May 31 – Memorial Day

This day often gets confused with Veterans Day, but it’s really meant to honor and remember those that sacrificed their lives in the line of duty. Memorial Day is not meant to celebrate those that are currently serving… so don’t thank someone for their service on this day.

So there you have it!

Over 20 social media content ideas for the month of May!

Use these holidays to create themed content, participate in social conversations online, or run sales or specials for your clients and customers.

Before we cue the confetti, there is one very important thing to keep in mind: YOUR DREAM CUSTOMER.

If she doesn’t drink, you may want to skip out the ones that celebrate alcohol. If creating content around the holiday or theme doesn’t serve her by adding value to your relationship, it’s probably not worth posting.

Don’t have any idea who your dream customer is?  You definitely need to check out my FREE Ideal Client Development Guide.

Hope you enjoyed this list!  If you have any friends that would benefit from these social media content ideas — please share this blog with them!

Thanks for reading!
